Chapter 78 What is Crossing?
Chapter 78 What is Crossing?
Yunhe Temple remained closed, but Gu Qianbei moved in.
"The meditation room over there is where you'll stay for the next month. There are sheets and blankets provided, but you need to wash them before you leave."
We eat in the dining hall at 7:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 5:00 PM every day, for a period of 15 minutes.
There won't be any food left after that.
By the way, you have to choose a job to do, otherwise you won't have anything to eat.
The only jobs available at the temple right now are cooking, sweeping, and copying scriptures. Which one do you want to do?
The young monk Nian'an was introducing Yunhe Temple to Gu Qianbei. Although he was young, he seemed surprisingly reliable.
"Sweep the floor. I can cook, but I don't really know how to cook vegetarian dishes."
Gu Qianbei thought about it and made her own choice.
"You really know how to choose; this is the most tiring job. It involves cleaning the entire open space of the temple."
It takes me two hours to clean every time, and I'm so tired I can barely stand up straight.
The little monk Nian'an stuck out his tongue, seemingly recalling his nightmare of sweeping the floor.
"It's alright, just consider it a way to cultivate your mind. You know, many great people started out sweeping floors."
Seeing how adorable the little monk Nian'an was, Gu Qianbei couldn't help but pat his bald head.
It feels really good.
"Don't touch my head!"
The little monk Nian'an struggled to break free from Gu Qianbei's clutches, then asked suspiciously, "How come I've never heard of a big shot who sweeps the floor? You're not lying to me, are you?"
The Buddha said, "It cannot be spoken."
Gu Qianbei spoke mysteriously, whetting the little monk's appetite.
"Hmph, fine, don't tell me then. If you miss the vegetarian meal time later, I won't save my favorite tofu for you."
The young monk Nian'an gave a light snort and turned to leave.
This seemed to be his idea for the greatest punishment he could inflict on Gu Qianbei.
"What an adorable little monk."
Gu Qianbei smiled and pushed open the door to the meditation room.
The meditation room was small but spacious, containing nothing but a bed and a table.
However, the room was spotless, indicating that it had been thoroughly cleaned beforehand.
"What a wonderful place to cultivate one's character!"
night.
Gu Qianbei stood beside the Yuanzhao Well and set up a large pot.
He put all the prepared medicinal herbs, such as Frost Moon Flower and Moon Heart Grass, into the mixture, then filled it with water from the Yuanzhao Well, and began the brewing process.
The young monk Nian'an watched with great interest from the side.
"Master said you're going to brew wine here?"
"good."
"You're a strange person. Who comes to a temple to brew wine? If my master weren't such a good man, he would have kicked you out."
"I'm disgusted," said the little monk Nian'an.
"Perhaps your master sees this as a form of training for you?"
Gu Qianbei said with a smile as he brewed the wine.
"Refinement? What refinement?"
The young monk Nian'an frowned, unable to understand.
Why must monks abstain from alcohol?
"You're going to test me? I'm not afraid!"
The young monk Nian'an stood up straight, looking proud.
The Vinaya Pitaka states that drinking alcohol has ten faults: First, it makes one look unwell; second, it weakens one's strength; third, it impairs one's vision; fourth, it causes one to display anger and malice; fifth, it damages one's livelihood and means of livelihood; sixth, it increases illness; seventh, it increases disputes and lawsuits; eighth, it spreads a bad reputation; ninth, it diminishes one's wisdom; and tenth, it leads to physical death and rebirth in the three evil realms.
Therefore, those who practice Buddhism should not drink alcohol, lest they increase their karmic obstacles.
After Nian'an finished speaking, he immediately put on an expression that said, "Come and praise me!"
"Amazing. Such a young age and he can already recite these scriptures."
Gu Qianbei understood immediately and granted his small wish.
"Of course! I'm the smartest monk at Yunhe Temple after Senior Brother Lu Zhu, and Master's last disciple!"
The little monk Nian'an became even more smug as he spoke.
"Do you know why people like to drink?"
"this……"
The little monk Nian'an looked troubled, scratched his shiny head, and after confirming that he couldn't think of anything, he drooped his head like a wilted eggplant.
"have no idea."
"Because drinking alcohol will make you drunk."
"What's so good about being drunk? Doesn't being drunk make you more likely to cause trouble?"
The young monk Nian'an was puzzled.
"That's only a small group of people."
"Then why do most people get drunk?"
"Because all people suffer, there is too much lack of freedom and too many things to bear when they are awake."
But when I'm drunk, I get a tiny bit of stolen freedom.
"Isn't that just deceiving yourself?"
The young monk Nian'an showed a look of disdain.
"Yes. But people need to allow themselves a little self-deception. Otherwise, this chaotic world is really suffocating."
Is life really that difficult?
"It's difficult."
"Why don't I think so? I think life is so much fun. The morning sun, the evening sunset, the muddy puddles on a rainy day, the warm sunshine on a sunny day, even the crickets in the vegetable garden are so much fun to me."
Life has so many fun things, how could it be difficult?
That's because someone has supported you through this world; you don't need to grow up yet.
When you grow up, you'll know how difficult life is.
"Growing up is such a hassle."
The little monk Nian'an shook his head, suddenly feeling a bit more afraid of growing up.
"Don't be afraid. Life may be tough, but it will always pass."
Gu Qianbei smiled.
"Wait, where did you get to? Weren't we talking about the relationship between brewing and refining?"
The young monk Nian'an came to his senses and gave him a look that said, "You're not kidding me."
"Cultivating Buddhism is about salvation. First, one must save oneself, then save others, and finally save the world. The so-called precepts are the first step in self-salvation."
However, the so-called precepts require you to have desires first, and then you must abstain from them; this is what is meant by self-salvation.
If you don't have this desire in the first place, why bother to give it up?
You little monk, you've never seen or drunk alcohol before. Even if you quit drinking, it won't bother you at all.
Just like your senior brother Lu Zhu, who had never experienced love before, how could he let go of it?
This time, he picked it up and put it down, and only then could he truly say he had overcome the bond of love. Do you understand, little monk?
The young monk Nian'an suddenly realized something and slapped his forehead.
"Oh! I understand! You mean, Master had you brew wine here so that the wine would arouse our desires, and then we would suppress those desires, and that's how we survived the wine tribulation."
"Not bad, this child is teachable."
Gu Qianbei nodded in satisfaction.
"Of course. But what's so difficult about that? I've smelled the alcohol, and I have absolutely no desire to drink it."
It doesn't even smell as good as soy milk with sugar.
"That's someone else's wine. My wine is different from everyone else's."
Gu Qianbei smiled, and then completed the final step of brewing.
He poured the prepared wine from the pot into a large jar, then threw the jar forcefully upwards, where it landed on the pavilion.
For a moment, the wine in the jar reflected the full moon.
Afterwards, the well water in the jar is changed daily, leaving a bottom layer, which is then calcined with internal energy for a month. When the next full moon arrives, the "Looking at the Bright Moon" tea will be ready.
"Done."
Gu Qianbei clapped his hands and smiled with satisfaction.
Suddenly, faint footsteps approached, and Gu Qianbei turned to look into the distance.
A figure was seen moving quickly through the temple; clearly an uninvited guest, and a woman at that.
