Chapter 175
Chapter 175
“I…” Meng Yingying suddenly found herself at a loss for words.
Not long ago, she had been pushed to the brink by Third Wu and had thought about taking him down with her.
But men cheating seemed like an ordinary thing. Growing up, she had seen plenty of men fooling around. Her own father had almost run off with another woman once.
It was her mother who had dragged her siblings along, clung to her father’s leg, and cried her heart out, saying that if he left, she would have no choice but to take the children and die. That was the only way they had managed to keep him.
And somehow, their family had just carried on like that.
“Forget it. It’s probably too much for you to take in all at once right now. From now on, I’ll take you out more often to see the world. Once you’ve seen more, you’ll understand that in this world, nothing is more important than loving yourself.” Song Nianchu’s smile was bright.
Meng Yingying felt as though a seed had broken through the soil inside her heart and was now growing strong.
“Mm!” Meng Yingying nodded firmly.
Over the next few days, Song Nianchu was busy in the village.
Mu Shi’an’s woodworking factory had set up its tents, but with his leg injured, he couldn’t do much and could mostly only supervise from the sidelines.
Fortunately, even sitting on a stool, he could teach the newcomers, so the progress wasn’t falling behind.
That day came when Mu Shi’an needed to go to the hospital for a dressing change. Song Nianchu again wanted to carry him there on her back.
But Mu Shi’an insisted on using a handcart. With no other choice, Song Nianchu went along with it.
Using the handcart made things easier for Song Nianchu, but it took more time on the road. By the time they reached the hospital, it was nearly noon.
Song Nianchu was helping Mu Shi’an toward the doctor when, unexpectedly, a familiar voice called out from behind them as they crossed the lobby.
“Mu Shi’an.”
Song Nianchu instinctively turned around, and sure enough, it was that Zheng Lanhui again.
“Comrade Zheng,” Mu Shi’an greeted her coolly.
“You’re here for a dressing change, right? Come with me.” Zheng Lanhui looked at Mu Shi’an with a beaming smile, not sparing Song Nianchu a single glance.
It was as if she didn’t even see her.
Song Nianchu frowned slightly, and Mu Shi’an didn’t move either.
“What’s the matter? Don’t you trust my medical skills? Besides, I’m the only one on duty at this hour.” Zheng Lanhui added another remark.
“Let’s go with Dr. Zheng,” Song Nianchu said, looking up at Mu Shi’an.
“Alright,” Mu Shi’an nodded.
Seeing how obediently Mu Shi’an listened to Song Nianchu, Zheng Lanhui’s smile almost faltered.
But she quickly suppressed it. After all, she was just a fisherwoman from a small village—nothing to worry about.
Zheng Lanhui led Mu Shi’an and Song Nianchu to the treatment room.
Her technique was indeed very skilled. She changed the dressing for Mu Shi’an and re-bandaged the wound, even more carefully than the previous doctor had.
“The wound is healing pretty well, but it’s a bit long. You’ll need to come back in three days for another dressing change,” Zheng Lanhui instructed.
“Mm,” Mu Shi’an replied, maintaining his distant demeanor.
“The family member can go pick up the medicine,” Zheng Lanhui said, handing a prescription to Song Nianchu without seeming bothered by his attitude, as if she were used to it.
Mu Shi’an made a move to get up and leave with her, but Zheng Lanhui stopped him.
“Wait here. I still have some other things to discuss with you.”
Mu Shi’an furrowed his brow and was about to say something, but Song Nianchu smiled at him.
“It’s fine. Just wait for me here. I’ll pick up the medicine and come back to get you.”
Mu Shi’an hesitated for a moment before finally nodding.
As Song Nianchu left, Zheng Lanhui gave her a knowing smile, the corners of her mouth curling with a hint of mockery.
But Song Nianchu didn’t care and walked away without a second thought.
The treatment room fell silent, leaving only Mu Shi’an and Zheng Lanhui.
Zheng Lanhui’s expression immediately softened.
“Shi’an, back when I found out what happened to your family, I kept begging my parents to help you out. Unfortunately, in the end, we couldn’t do anything.”
“It’s fine. I know Teacher did his best.” At the mention of his teacher, Mu Shi’an’s tone lost some of its coldness.
“My father has always thought highly of you. He says you’re his best student, and he hasn’t given up on you. He’s still working to get you transferred back,” Zheng Lanhui said firmly.
“Please thank him for me, and tell him not to go through so much trouble on my behalf. I’m doing well here.” A pang of guilt rose in Mu Shi’an’s heart—it troubled him that his teacher was still worrying about him.
“How are you doing well? You’re injured like this! You’re my father’s most promising student. He even says your future achievements will surpass his. You should be protected and given every care. How could you end up hurt?” Zheng Lanhui’s voice grew louder.
“Comrade Zheng, my injury has nothing to do with anyone else. It was my own carelessness,” Mu Shi’an said with a frown.
“So you’re planning to stay in that little fishing village forever? Is it because of that woman just now? I’ve already looked into it—she forced you into marrying into her family. I wasn’t here before, but now that I am, you don’t have to suffer this humiliation. If you want a divorce, I can help—” Zheng Lanhui spoke with fervor.
But before she could finish, Mu Shi’an cut her off.
“Comrade Zheng, my relationship with my wife is very good. She has never forced me to do anything, and I have no intention of divorcing her. Please don’t say such things again, especially in front of my wife.” Mu Shi’an’s face turned cold and stern, his tone sharp and resolute.
Zheng Lanhui was stunned on the spot, unable to speak for a long time.
“You… you’re defending her like this?” After what felt like an eternity, she finally found her voice.
In her memory, Mu Shi’an had always been distant and indifferent. Apart from his research and experiments, nothing else seemed to matter to him.
Back in school, many classmates and colleagues had liked him, but he hadn’t shown interest in any of them.
She had always thought that was just his nature, and she believed she was the special one among all those people, convinced that they would end up together in the end.
But now, he was shouting at her for another woman.
So he did have emotions that could stir—but they were for someone else.
“She is my wife. Naturally, I will defend her,” Mu Shi’an said solemnly.
“But you didn’t marry her willingly. If you get a divorce, she won’t be your wife anymore,” Zheng Lanhui pressed urgently.
“Who said I wasn’t willing?”
“You… were willing?” Zheng Lanhui asked incredulously.
“Of course,” Mu Shi’an replied without hesitation.
“That’s impossible!” Zheng Lanhui shook her head frantically. “How could you willingly marry into her family? She must have forced you into it, right?”
