Chapter 408 - 280: Another Power and Lord An Jin?
Chapter 408 - 280: Another Power and Lord An Jin?
The Demon Beast Forest was littered with corpses. Large swathes of trees were snapped in half. A blackish-gray fog shrouded the entire forest, and the air was thick with the nauseating stench of blood and rot.
Decay, revulsion, and a suffocating chaos.
This was the desolate forest that had been overrun by Demon Beasts.
Ze Sheng brandished his sword, cutting down the last Demon Seed. His once pristine white robes were now dyed red with blood. Beneath the robe, his body was covered in gashes and wounds of all sizes, but not a flicker of emotion showed on his ice-cold face.
A mountain wind rose from all directions, billowing the man’s silver hair and tattered robes.
He flicked his wrist.
The Light Saber in his hand scattered into motes of light.
Trees stood tall on both sides. As the man walked slowly forward, a silent wave of Energy dispersed the black fog in the forest. At the same time, a faint purple glow coiled around his scarred body. A mysterious and sacred power poured into the open wounds, meticulously healing every ghastly injury.
However, the old wound that pierced his chest split open again.
It could not be healed.
"Ugh..." His expression faltered. He clutched his chest, forcibly suppressing a pained groan.
After a moment’s pause, he narrowed his long eyes and looked into the distance—in the direction of Unicorn King City.
Just before, during his fight with Qi Yuan and that horde of demonic creatures, he had sensed that she had already left the Royal City.
’Did I fall for a trick? Could this all be a conspiracy by those two Demon Beastmen? Has her identity been exposed?’
Ze Sheng’s thoughts were in turmoil. His fists clenched, and his once calm and indifferent expression now churned with the fury of a tempest.
In the end, he turned and headed in a different direction.
...
Ten years ago, after losing the partner he loved, Ling Hong fell into a deep depression. He was so grief-stricken that the only comfort he could find was through the children she had left behind.
And now, after so many years apart, seeing An Jin alive in the flesh, the emotions he had suppressed for so long nearly burst forth.
But his reason held. The Beastmen he had sent out found her in the forest—the same forest that had recently been ravaged by Demon Beasts, led by the now demonized Mi Yin.
Ling Hong had, after all, fought both openly and covertly with that snake for many years and had long since figured out his nature—
He had always been insidious, cunning, and utterly without a moral compass. After Jin’er left, what little conscience that snake had vanished completely. He was rotten to the core, inside and out, devoid of all humanity.
After becoming a demon, he only grew worse. His methods were exceptionally bloodthirsty and twisted, and he took pleasure in slaughter.
Whether it was a precious female or a young cub, he killed them all without distinction.
’He wouldn’t have just spared a single cub in a forest that had been wiped out by Demon Beasts.’
’Could it be that the snake didn’t discover her identity?’
’Impossible.’ Ling Hong shook his head, dismissing the thought the instant it crossed his mind.
’Even I can sense her aura so keenly; there’s no way that snake was oblivious.’
’But if he really did find her, why would Mi Yin have willingly handed her over?’
Ling Hong’s thoughts were in turmoil. He couldn’t help but pull her tighter into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck. His long fingers tightened around her waist, and his breathing grew heavy with the force of his embrace.
Her gaze grew more bewildered. ’He’s holding me so tightly... I can barely breathe.’ Yet, surprisingly, she didn’t find his closeness repulsive at all.
"I already asked her. She really doesn’t remember anything." Seeing the female’s expression shift from bewildered to pained, Chi Li quickly stopped Ling Hong, his voice firm. "Don’t force her to think about it. It’s useless, unless we can find that missing piece of her Soul."
Ling Hong’s expression gradually calmed. He released her, a pang of guilt stirring within him as he saw her flushed cheeks. He said softly, "It’s alright. If you can’t remember, you can’t remember. After you’ve rested for another couple of days, how about I take you for a walk around the city?"
His long, lightly calloused fingers came to rest on her delicate cheek.
"The city has changed so much since you left. You probably wouldn’t even recognize it anymore."
Chi Li brought over several healers skilled in pharmacology to arrange her convalescence for the next few days.
After leaving the room, he said to Ling Hong, "She doesn’t have much time left."
Ling Hong’s brow furrowed. He turned to look at him, his jaw tight and his expression turning cold. "What do you mean?"
"Although she’s conscious now and her body can move freely like a normal person’s, she doesn’t have much time." Chi Li pressed his lips together and lowered his head. "When the Beastmen you sent out rescued her, she was already on the brink of death. If Ze Mu hadn’t given her a partial blood transfusion, she might not have survived long enough to see you."
"She’s not only missing a piece of her Soul, but she’s also missing her complete Soul blood."
"If you want her to regain her memories, you must find her Soul. And if you want her body to recover fully, you must find her Soul blood."
"But we don’t have the slightest clue where either of them could be..."
Ling Hong’s brow knitted in silence, his heart sinking as if into an abyss. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing her again.
"If we don’t do another transfusion, what’s the most time she has left?"
"A month at most."
...
Wamiya’s health improved over the next two days, and her spirits lifted considerably. Every day, the three little ones who called her "Mother" would come to talk with her, and the tall, handsome, silver-haired man would always spend the day quietly by her side.
It was just that the medicine brewed by the Fox Clan Witch Doctor was so bitter she never wanted to drink it.
"Shall I take you for a walk around the city?" The man took her hand, his gesture gentle and cautious.
"You..."
"Ling Hong. Call me Ling Hong." He repeated this tirelessly, even though she forgot every time.
The female smiled faintly. "I know. Ling Hong, a big white wolf, the City Lord of this Royal City. I’ve already remembered."
A flicker of emotion crossed Ling Hong’s cool, handsome face. He couldn’t stop himself from reaching out to touch her cheek, the familiar sensation making him linger. "No, you got one thing wrong."
"Huh?" She blinked in confusion.
"The City Lord of this city was never me. It was you. I’ve only been managing it in your stead. Now that you’ve returned, the city should be formally returned to you as well."
Her hand rested on his palm. She looked down, not quite understanding. After thinking for a long while, she just shook her head in confusion. "I... I don’t remember..."
"It’s okay. I’ll help you get that memory back. I’ll take you for a walk around the city. Maybe you’ll remember something if you see a familiar face."
The rainy season had just officially ended, kicking off the frenzied period of gathering supplies before the cold season. Tribes and cities of all sizes from the surrounding areas would come to the Royal City to make extensive purchases.
Along the way, the two encountered many different kinds of Beastmen.
The Beastmen would all bow their heads respectfully to Ling Hong, but when they saw the female by his side, their expressions would show a hint of confusion.
After all, she had been gone for so long. Several generations of Beastmen had come and gone, and as the city expanded, many new Beastmen had flocked to it.
"Lord An Jin?!"
An astonished cry came from not far away. The person ran up to them. "Lord An Jin, is it really you?"
